Many people consider Pole Position to be the grand-daddy of modern-day racing games, the truth is that Sega got there first. I first saw this game in a shopping centre while on a school trip to France in 1981, and I was totally blown away. Full colour 3D graphics, sprite scaling (and we're talking BIG sprites - especially on the city levels), changing scenary as you progressed through the game, dips in the road that hampered your vision...it was all there. Without this game, Outrun, and countless other racing classics, might never have happened.

Nothing special by today's standards, but at the time they were very good indeed. Functional and basic, as with most arcade games of the time. A bit unforgiving (although not as bad as Namco's Pole Position). Such innovations as dipping roads and changing trackside scenary - now present in every racing game imaginable - appeared here for the very first time. The roads were always packed with rival drivers (usually 3 or 4 on screen at once), making for a hectic experience. Ahead of its time, especially in the graphics department. The influences Turbo would have on later racing games - particuarly Sega's own Outrun - are obvious. Proof that Sega have always being kings of the racing genre.
