100 Metre Sprint Quite simply, a dash for the finish line. Tap the two run buttons alternately as quickly as you can. Alternatively, use the 'pepper pot method' as employed by a friend of mine (no names mentioned ... *cough*Sean*cough*) - steal a pepper pot from a nearby cafe and slide it from button to button. Good idea huh? No, I don't think so either.

Long Jump Ah, my favourite event. Run as quickly as possible by tapping the two 'run' buttons, then launch yourself from the line by holding down the 'action' button until the desired angle is reached. The optimum angle is 45º. Also, jumping with your foot on the line increases the length of your jump slightly. |

Javelin Very similar to the Long Jump except the run-up is shorter, and it's much much harder to get a decent distance. The optimum angle is about 42º. I think.

110 Metre Hurdles Annoyingly, this is the event my brother Darren always wins by a mile. The key to success here is to build up a good rhythm from the start. Listen to me, giving out tips and I'm the worst at this event ... |

Hammer The first of two events that give you time to recover from all that button-pounding malarkey. Eight spins should be all you need to qualify, but if you want to be really flash and go for those records, try nine.
|
High Jump Another more relaxed event, the High Jump requires accurate timing and judgement as opposed to pneumatic fingers. Try to jump as near to the bar and as vertical as possible, then tap the button carefully to ease the man over the bar. |

The fact that I fire it up almost daily should give you an idea of how much I love playing Track & Field. Konami have taken a simple but brilliant idea and produced from it one of the most obscenely playable games to ever take up space in an arcade. Typically for Konami, presentation is top-notch, and the game oozes quality throughout. Featuring copious amounts of speech, catchy jingles, fluid animation and Konami's trademark cartoon-style graphics, aesthetically the game cannot be faulted. As we all know however, it's gameplay that counts and Track & Field has it in heaps. If you've never played it before, take my word for it - ignore the Playstation and N64 rehashes, find a dingy old arcade with a Track & Field machine in the corner, take a few mates and a pocket-full of coins and give it a go. I promise you won't regret it. |

| Trademark Konami cartoon-style sprites, smooth animation and overall a very polished look. | Catchy jingles, a half-decent rendition of 'Chariots of Fire' and copious amounts of speech (to die for in 1983!) | Is this a playable game? Do rabbits f*&k? | Another Konami classic and truly a defining moment in arcade history. |
